Welcome back to Whatcha’ Watchin’, the show where AP, Nitro, and Eric (when he’s not traveling the world) dive into what’s currently on their screens. This week, they’ve got a lot to talk about, including the new PenguinTV show, the psychological drama I Saw the TV Glow, the spy action comedy Union, and the long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuice, aptly titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. But first, let’s dive into their highlights and lowlights of the week.

Highlights and Lowlights

AP’s highlight was his trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the heart of Amish country. He enjoyed the beautiful farmland and the delicious Pennsylvania Dutch food. He also shared hopes of one day going to an Amish-themed theme park called Dutch Wonderland. Have you ever been? Let us know at mailbag@geekyagogo.com!

Unfortunately, all highlights usually come with a lowlight, and AP shared his frustrating experience with a vacuum former. He’s been working on a project for New York City Comic Con that requires him to build a vacuum former, but he’s been having one problem after another. He’s had to order new plastic and a new heater, and he’s still unsure if he’ll be able to get it working in time for the pop culture con.

Continuing the theme of lowlights, Nitro was having his credit card stolen. The thief made several purchases on Amazon, including over $1,000 worth of golf club grips, because if there’s one thing that’s certain about golfers, they’re all liars and thieves. Fortunately, Nitro was eventually able to get his money back.

Nitro’s highlight of the week was attending the world premiere of The Penguin. He got to walk the red carpet, see the show before everyone else, and even meet Michael Giacchino, the composer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, whose son Mic Giacchino also composed the music for the show.

The Penguin

Since Nitro attended the premiere, we’re kicking off today’s episode with The Penguin. He doesn’t want to spoil it, but he will say that it’s a great show that takes place ten days after the events of The Batman. Colin Farrell is fantastic as the Penguin, and the show does a great job of grounding the character in reality, unlike other versions of the supervillain. Nitro is excited to see where the rest of the season goes.

I Saw the TV Glow

AP watched Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow on Max starring Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical, Bill and Ted Face the Music) and Justice Smith (Dungeons and Dragons: Den of Thieves). It’s a psychological drama about a teenager wrapped up in a mysterious late-night TV show. It’s a cerebral film that’s more of a coming-of-age story than a horror film that lives within the spiral of the question “what if”. AP enjoyed it, but his wife didn’t. It’s a thoughtful film worth checking out if you’re looking for something different. Oh, and the soundtrack is spectacular.

Union (Nitro)

Nitro also watched Union on Netflix. It is a spy action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg, Halle Berry, and JK Simmons. It’s an age-old tale of a regular Joe being thrown into an extraordinary situation. It’s a good film to put on in the background to fill the silence while you wash dishes or fold your laundry, nothing more.

Beetlejuice 2

AP finally saw Beetlejuice 2, and he was very impressed. It’s a rare sequel that lives up to the original. Michael Keaton is hilarious as Beetlejuice, and the film does a great job of balancing old and new elements. AP highly recommends it to fans of the original and newcomers alike.
