Kathleen Kennedy is Out. Disney’s Star Wars Drama Continues.

What a crap time to be a Star Wars fan. The Last Jedi has divided a once peaceful and happy group of people known as Star Wars fans. Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t live up to its hype and was a box office disappointment. And… wait… thats it. Wow, in the grand scheme of things that’s not a lot of bad stuff – and to be honest – The Last Jedi still brought in $620M+ domestically and $710M+ internationally ($1.3B total). Yes, that’s down by about $700M from Force Awakens, but also – we hadn’t waited 30 years for The Last Jedi the way we did Force Awakens, and myriad other reasons.

That all being said. The rumor mill is cranking and it’s cranking hard – and it’s all being started by Beyond the Trailer’s Grace Randolph who, according to her, has credible sources at Disney that say Kathleen Kennedy is just minutes away from getting a four fingered, white gloved pat on the back and push out the door.

According to Randolph, there’s a deep, Pinewood conspiracy against Kennedy:

“There was a call, a secret conference call with all the top Star Wars brass in attendance… Top brass at not only Star Wars, but also Marvel and Pixar, were also in on the call, but listening only, likely at the request of Bob Iger, who wants their advice on how to fix this shit show. And yes, he does know it’s a shit show. Evidence? The word that he wants Kathleen Kennedy out. He actually does, but, nobody will take her job. Several have been approached, but turned down, including J.J. Abrams, who turned it down flat and didn’t even hesitate.”

Headlines everywhere are touting Kennedy’s dismissal is only a matter of time. However it’s very important for those of us with the ability to utilize abstract thought to remember – THESE ARE JUST RUMORS.

That being said, Kathleen Kennedy is one of the most prolific producers in Hollywood today. She can produce a $250M film in her sleep. What’s lacking at LucasFilm is strong creative leadership. Not to start my own rumors or speculation, but it makes more sense to keep Kennedy on as President and find solid creative leadership. While she focuses on the production, someone else can focus on the story. I’d put my money on that route before Papa Bear Iger kicks Kennedy out.

Only time will tell. In the meantime, may the force be with you Kathleen Kennedy, always.
